Since my “Planning is Indispensable” article from last week, there have two more incidents to address and one is developing. One here in Colorado Springs where an entire small business strip mall (including a library) will be closed for at least 6 weeks while underground sewage lines are being repaired.

The other is a storm that moved up the east coast from Florida to Maine bringing torrential rain, coastal flooding and, in some places, hurricane force winds and tornados. And major storms are now developing on the west coast according to Weather.com.

What Can a Roadmap for Disruptions Look Like?

There are 3 core areas of what a resilience roadmap can look like for your small business to go from unprepared to resilient.

They are:

RECORD:

a. Ownership: We start writing the plan.
b. Recording: Key processes and activities.
c. Analysis: We analyze risks, procedures and services.

RESPOND:

a. Action: Detect, prevent and respond
b. Exercise: Train staff
c. Post-Event: Discussion for improvement

RECOVER:

a. Reduce downtime
b. Reputation: Increase customer confidence
c. Industry Leader: Flexible, responsive, agile, vigilant

According to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, "Small businesses make up 99.9 percent of businesses in the United States. They play a vital role in job growth and growing local economies. Unfortunately, when a disaster occurs, an estimated 25 percent of small businesses do not re-open."

Resilience is the glue that keeps your coffee shop moving forward and gives you peace of mind during challenging times and especially during unexpected, yet inevitable disruptions.
